Once in one of the great filthy downtown thoroughfares of Cairo I had to lean against a wall not for the heat or the dust; just dazed with exposure to the crowd. But not for long. Indeed the crowd is cleansing; to shed for a period one's ego; surely this cannot be bad; indeed it might be positively therapeutic, as it was for Dickens who said: "I don't seem to be able to get rid of my spectres unless I can lose them in crowds.

To optimize photosynthesis, cyanobacteria move toward or away from a light source by a process known as phototaxis. Phototactic movement of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC6803 is a surface-dependent phenomenon that requires type IV pili, cellular appendages implicated in twitching and social motility in a range of bacteria. To elucidate regulation of cyanobacterial motility, we generated transposon-tagged mutants with aberrant phototaxis; mutants were either nonmotile or exhibited an ``inverted motility response'' negative phototaxis ; relative to wild-type cells. Several mutants contained transposons in genes similar to those involved in bacterial chemotaxis. Synechocystis PCC6803 has three loci with chemotaxis-like genes, of which two, Tax1 and Tax3, are involved in phototaxis. Transposons interrupting the Tax1 locus yielded mutants that exhibited an inverted motility response, suggesting that this locus is involved in controlling positive phototaxis. However, a strain null for taxAY1 was nonmotile and hyperpiliated. Interestingly, whereas the C-terminal region of the TaxD1 polypeptide is similar to the signaling domain of enteric methyl-accepting chemoreceptor proteins, the N terminus has two domains resembling chromophore-binding domains of phytochrome, a photoreceptor in plants. Hence, TaxD1 may play a role in perceiving the light stimulus. Mutants in the Tax3 locus are nonmotile and do not make type IV pili. These findings establish links between chemotaxis-like regulatory elements and type IV pilus-mediated phototaxis.

Criminal activities range from purely local to truly global. Most crimes are perpetrated by individuals who operate within the area in which they live. A few are perpetrated globally illegal sale of weapons, money laundering ; . However, a growing number of crimes have a regional dimension in the sense that the criminals operate in more than one country of a given region see Tanzi [2001] ; . This is true for prostitution, the smuggling or illegal traffic of individuals and, to a certain extent, of drugs, and other similar crimes. Once again, cooperation among relevant countries that succeeded in reducing these regional crimes would, de facto, produce an important regional public good in the form of increased safety.

II of the 1996 Act, and the subsequent Waste Management Planning ; Regulations, 1997, specified the nature and scope of certain matters to be addressed in such plans. From the outset, local authorities were encouraged to adopt a regional approach to the planning process, with a view to the more efficient and cost-effective provision of services and infrastructure. This approach was reinforced in the October 1998 policy statement Changing our Ways. Grant assistance of over 1.1 million was provided to local authorities under the EU funded Operational Programme for Environmental Services, 1994-1999, in respect of nine waste management strategy studies carried out by or on behalf of local authorities, for the purposes of informing the preparation of the proposed local and regional plans. The overall objective of the planning process, which entails considerable public consultation, is to ensure comprehensive, high quality, waste management plans which will fully address the complex issues arising in relation to the prevention, minimisation and recovery of wastes, and which provide for the environmentally sound disposal of residual wastes. Accordingly, it was important that adequate time be allowed for the completion of this process. However, the planning process has proved to be lengthy and, in light of current EU legal proceedings against Ireland, it is imperative that it be completed as soon as possible. Local Authority Funding. 391. Mr. Browne Carlow-Kilkenny ; asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when a decision will be made on the application by Carlow County Council for one-stop shop facilities in Tullow and Bagenalstown. [23428 00] Minister for the Environment and Local Government Mr. Dempsey ; : Carlow County Council's application for funding for one-stopshops in Tullow and Bagenalstown will be considered as part of overall funding for the initiative in 2001. 392. Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the additional costs to local authorities due to the increased price of bitumen; and if he will make the necessary funding available to allow for this charge in order that county councils will not have to put it as a first charge against the 2001 road grant. [23429 00] Minister for the Environment and Local Government Mr. Dempsey ; : Increased costs of oil based products are a reality of present international market conditions. Within the overall limits of the local government budgetary process, I would intend that regard should be had to this.

Route was found to be 101 TCID50 delivered in a 1 volume, whereas that for the intranasal route was 56106 TCID50 Torsteinsdottir et al., 2003 ; . This suggests that the lower respiratory tract and not the upper respiratory tract nasal cavity and nasopharynx ; is the major site of VMV entry during respiratory transmission. It is unclear exactly which parts of the respiratory tract are exposed by i.t. instillates, although certainly trachea and possibly lower lung bronchioles and alveolar areas ; may be involved. Comparisons between trachea and lower lung for infection efficiency have not been performed. Therefore, it is unclear whether the high sensitivity of the tracheal route for infection represents a unique feature of the tracheal mucosa or is due to exposure of lower lung, or both. In addition to the lack of knowledge regarding the site of VMV uptake during respiratory transmission, the precise nature of the infectious agent is unclear. It has long been presumed that respiratory transmission of VMV is mediated by inhalation of free virus or cell-associated virus, most likely VMV-infected alveolar macrophages AMs ; Pepin and feverfew.

A specially devised computer program, which automatically classifies and quantifies platelet and fibrin coverage, was used. For simplicity, platelet interactions were globally expressed as the total percentage of the surface of the vessel covered by platelets % covered surface %CS ; . The presence of fibrin in the same microscopic fields was expressed as percentage of fibrin %F ; deposited on the surface length of the screened vessel.9, 10.

Increasing consumption of energy is associated with advanced economies, as well as with longer life expectancies, higher levels of education and other indicators of social development. The correlation is not precise--among industrial economies for example the United States has far higher levels of energy consumption per capita or per dollar of GDP than European countries or Japan. Social development in particular can often be achieved without high levels of energy consumption, as for instance in the state of Kerala in India, or Sri Lanka. High energy consumption can also fail to produce economic growth if it is misdirected, as in the former Soviet Union, but there are no examples of substantial economic growth without corresponding growth in energy consumption. This is one of the central riddles of development. All models of development are directed to economic growth--yet if all countries consumed energy at U.S. or even European rates, sources of energy would rapidly be depleted, and the unwanted by-products of energy use would at best tax the ability of the environment to absorb them. The challenge is to find the means for the more affluent to reduce the burdens of consumption, and for poor countries and people to escape poverty without crippling either economies or the ecosphere. Escaping poverty is not merely a question of finding ways to increase energy consumption, but of changing the kinds of energy used. The energy sources of the poor and faslodex.
